In the last few episodes of Jazz Insights host Gordon Vernick profiled Jazz trumpet player Blue Mitchell. I had been vaguely familiar with Blue Mitchell, but these episodes really brought him back to my attention. Talking about someone who really knows how to play beautiful clear lines.
Prior I have listened to his playing mainly on his many recordings as a sideman, mostly with Horace Silver I guess, but don’t think to have heard any of his solo recordings before. So shame on me, but I am intrigued by the clarity and beauty of his lines.
The podcast is a series of three episodes in total and is absolutely worth to listen to:
I did some further searching and found the 10min feature Something About Blue in which record producer Orrin Keepnews talks about Blue Mitchell and about the production of the 1959 recording Blue Soul(Spotify link) on Riverside records. The title track is a beautiful example of the clarity that I enjoy.
